Event Report – An Evening with Joe Schmidt and Irish Rugby

On June 13th, in Balcony Restaurant in Roppongi, the IJCC gathered to enjoy a panel discussion with Irish Rugby. Joined by our friends in the ANZ and British Chambers.

As the Ireland Mens national rugby team prepare to face Japan in two tests (Tokyo and Shizuoka), we heard from Joe Schmidt (Head Coach), Paul Dean (Team Manager) and Rhys Ruddock (Ireland Captain).

The evening started with a welcome speech from the Ambassador of Ireland to Japan, Anne Barrington. Then Joe, Paul and Rhys gave us their insights into many topics including the current tour of Japan, the Rugby World Cup 2019, the Lions and the Sunwolves.

Following the panel discussion, which was expertly moderated by IJCC member Trevor Webster, the Irish Rugby guests networked with IJCC members and their guests.

The upcoming tour of Japan has received heightened interest with last month's announcement that Ireland will play Japan in the pool stage of Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.

The IJCC wish Joe, Paul, Rhys and team the best for their upcoming tour of Japan.

About the Guests

Joe Schmidt is one of the leading coaches in world rugby. Having won trophies in New Zealand, France and Ireland including the European cup, Six Nations Championship and the Ranfurly Shield. Joe is known for his expert analysis of the opposition, for short, sharp training sessions, and for creating clever game plans. A rare leader that's been successful in all teams he's led.

Paul Dean represented St.Mary's, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions. Having played in Japan and in a Rugby World Cup he'll be in an ideal position to comment on the World Cup in Japan 2019.

Rhys Ruddock a Leinster player since 2009, he's Leinster youngest ever Captain. He leads Ireland for the first time since his Irish debut in 2010
