“Ireland and Europe in the context of the world economy” – a presentation by Prof. Patrick Honohan, Irish Central Bank Governor

The Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce and the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum are proud to present:

“Ireland and Europe in the context of the world economy” – a presentation by Prof. Patrick Honohan, Irish Central Bank Governor

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last two years have seen the world fixate on Europe, the Euro and Ireland as the economic future and viability of all three were brought into question. Debate has ensued as to what needs to be done to restore stability to all three.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear Professor Honohan's views.

The Governor's comments will touch upon four general areas:

  • the benefits for Ireland, and the rest of Europe, of closer financial and economic integration
  • the links between undue borrowing and inadequate risk controls by Irish banks before the financial crisis and the resulting severe imbalances in the Irish economy that have subsequently ensued
  • the efforts Ireland is now making to restore balance to the economy
  • the general outlook for the euro in view of the uncertain backdrop for the world economy and the widening growth differentials between Asia and the West

Professor Honohan

Highly regarded internationally as an expert on banking and financial systems. Professor Patrick Honohan was appointed Governor of the Irish Central Bank in September last year and the following month, joined the ECB's Governing Council. In his role as a council member with the ECB, he has been actively involved in helping to resolve the Greek crisis and is a key participant in efforts to stabalize the Euro.

Prior to these appointments, Honohan was Professor of International Financial Economics and Development at Trinity College Dublin. He took up this position in April 2007, after spending almost a decade at the World Bank where he was Senior Advisor on financial sector policy.
