Title: "Healthcare for an Aging Society: Japan's National Health Insurance &
Preventive Care Innovations"
Outline: Healthcare systems worldwide face the challenges of a changing
environment; healthcare costs are increasing, aging societies demand more
healthcare services and advancements in medical science and information
technologies increase the hopes for higher quality - and accessible -treatments.
How the Japanese government & healthcare providers respond to these
challenges will have a dramatic impact on Japanese society and economy
in the 21st century. This lecture will analyze the specific challenges and
some of the proposed solutions in this healthcare reform.
Speaker: Elizabeth J. Cobbs, Ph.D. Senior Director - Public & Industrial
Policy, Banyu Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd..
Profile: Dr. Elizabeth Cobbs joined Merck Headquarters in January, 2001 as
Manager, Asia Pacific Public & Industrial Policy. Dr. Cobbs took on responsibility
as Director, Public & Industrial Policy in 2004, liaising from Merck headquarters
with policy teams in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Tapping her
expertise in Japanese politics and society, Dr. Cobbs moved to Japan in 2005 as
Senior Director, Public & Industrial Policy at Merck's subsidiary,
Banyu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd .where she also serves as a member of
the Banyu Executive Committee. Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Cobbs was
assistant professor, Yale University, Department of Sociology and the Council on
East Asian Studies.
